About us
Building a safe, just and supportive community
The Department of Justice and Attorney-General is the government agency responsible for administering justice in Queensland.
Like other departments, we report to a minister, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, who is responsible to parliament for our work and performance.
As the name implies, our two main roles are:
- the administration of justice, focusing on the court system, and
- the Attorney-General's role as the state's first law officer and the community's legal representative.
We work to deliver an open and accessible justice system that protects and supports a fair and stable society based on the rule of law.
Courthouses are most people’s primary contact point with the justice system. There are 111 located in communities throughout Queensland.
Our wide and varied services help to build a safe, just and supportive society. They range from the registration of births to mediating neighbourhood disputes. Click here to learn more about our services.
As lead agency for the state’s criminal, civil and human rights laws, we:
- administer the related legislation, and
- develop new and improved laws and policy.
We are also lead agency in freedom of information and privacy policy. We develop and implement relevant laws and oversee their application across the Queensland Government.
