Right to information
Right to information (also referred to as RTI) refers to your legal right to information held by the Queensland Government, including our department.
The Right to Information Act 2009 (the RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (the IP Act) give a right of access to information held by government, unless, on balance it would be contrary to the public interest to release the information.
You have the legal right to apply for access to documents held by government agencies. The RTI Act also requires agencies such as the Department of Justice and Attorney-General to publish a publication scheme showing what information the agency routinely makes available and how the information can be accessed.
You do not have to give a reason for wanting documents.
You can request a review if you are dissatisfied with the decision made about your application or if your application is not processed in the prescribed time.
The legislation applies to Queensland Government ministers and departments, local councils and semi-government agencies and statutory authorities. It does not apply to documents held by the Commonwealth Government or by other state governments.
