Freedom of information
Freedom of information (also referred to as FOI) refers to your legal right to information held by the Queensland Government, including our department.
Our state's FOI legislation (the Freedom of Information Act 1992) aims to give broad access to documents of agencies and official documents of ministers, subject to certain restrictions.
You have the legal right to apply for:
- access to documents held by government agencies
- amendment of your personal information held by government agencies.
You do not have to give a reason for wanting documents.
You can request a review if you are dissatisfied with the decision made about your application or if your application is not processed in the prescribed time.
The legislation applies to Queensland Government ministers and departments, local councils and semi-government agencies and statutory authorities. It does not apply to documents held by the Commonwealth Government or by other state governments.
Our role in FOI
We are the lead agency for Queensland Government FOI policy. This means we are responsible for ensuring the administration of the Act by providing training and advice to other government agencies. We can also help you to access and understand the FOI process.
