Privacy
Our department is the lead agency for implementing privacy policy across Queensland Government.
To address your concerns about unauthorised use of personal information, the Queensland Government operates a privacy scheme.
The scheme ensures government agencies respect your personal information. Personal information is any information that would allow you to be identified, for example your name, age or physical characteristics.
There are strict rules about how this information is collected, stored, accessed, updated, used and disclosed. The rules aim to protect electronic and printed information about you from being lost, misused or inappropriately modified or disclosed.
The scheme operates under administrative means rather than legislation and is based on the same rules that apply to the federal public sector under the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.
More detailed information about the scheme can be found at the Queensland Privacy website.
If you have a question about the Queensland Government’s privacy scheme, you can:
- phone our privacy contact officer on 07 3247 5474
- email our Privacy Unit at trainingfoi.privacy@justice.qld.gov.au.
If you have specific questions about your personal information held at Queensland Government departments or agencies, contact them directly.
Other informationThe Department of Justice and Attorney-General privacy plan 2007 provides you and departmental staff with information about the Queensland Government's policy on privacy and how to protect the privacy of personal information.
It is also a guide for departmental staff who deal with personal information about how to assess and change practices where necessary to ensure we comply with the government's privacy policy.
Privacy awards
As the lead agency for privacy in the Queensland public sector, the Department of Justice and Attorney-General is encouraging nominations for the inaugural Australian Privacy Awards and Australian Privacy Medal.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner (Commonwealth) is conducting these awards to recognise individuals, government agencies, businesses and not-for-profit organisations that have excelled in this field.
These awards provide the opportunity to acknowledge those who have shown leadership and professionalism when applying privacy standards.
Nominations close 9 July 2008 with a presentation to take place at a gala dinner on 27 August 2008.
An information pack is available on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s website.
