Dispute resolution centres
Our department’s Dispute Resolution Branch provides a free, confidential and impartial mediation service for the community.
Since starting operations in Brisbane in 1990, we now have dispute resolution centres throughout Queensland for your convenience.
How can dispute resolution centres help you?
A dispute resolution centre offers you an alternative way of settling disputes before they get to court. This means savings in time, legal fees and court costs, for you and the whole community.
It also frees the court system to concentrate on problems that require determination by an outside party.
Our mediation service consists of supplying trained mediators who help you and other parties in a dispute to reach an agreement.
Our services are available to everyone, whatever their education, income, ethnic origins or language ability.
How successful is the service?
However you look at it, the number of mediation and facilitation sessions, the percentage of agreements reached, or compliance with those agreements—our mediation service has been very successful.
We have conducted more than 15,000 mediations and facilitations. Around 90 per cent of mediations result in agreement between the parties. When the parties work out the agreement themselves, their commitment to it is usually strong.
Follow-up surveys of all our clients, conducted three months after the mediation sessions, show a high level of client satisfaction with both our centre and the agreements.
The mediation process, while not suitable for all people or all disputes, helps resolve a wide range of disputes quickly and inexpensively.
