Justice Services

Justice Services comprises the following areas of the department:

Community Justice Services

Community Justice Services provides a range of services that support a fair and just society, including mediation and dispute resolution, Justices of the Peace (JP) services and registration of births, deaths and marriages. Community Justice Services has five business units:

Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages

Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is responsible for registering births, deaths, marriages, divorces, change of name and adoptions in Queensland. The registry also can assist you to search your family history using the online historical index or can buy copies of the Queensland Pioneers Index and the Queensland Federation Index.

Justices of the Peace Branch

Justices of the Peace Branch provides information about training and appointing Justices of the Peace (Qualified – JP Qual) and Commissioners for Declarations (C.decs). It maintains the Register of Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations in Queensland. The branch also monitors the conduct of JPs and C.decs.

Dispute Resolution Branch

Dispute Resolution Branch promotes the development of dispute resolution services and to provides independent, responsive and effective assistance to individuals and groups engaged in constructive conflict resolution. The branch offers training courses in mediation, facilitation and conflict resolution.

Legal Assistance Strategy and Funding Unit

Legal Assistance Strategy and Funding Unit administers the government investment in vital frontline justice services.

Victim Assist Queensland

Victim Assist Queensland focusses on victim recovery by paying for, or reimbursing the costs of goods and services that the victim requires to help them recover from the physical and psychological effects of the crime.

Blue Card Services

The blue card system screens and monitors people who work with children and young people in Queensland. The branch’s activities also include:

  • educating the community about the blue card system, legislative requirements and associated obligations
  • training and assisting organisations with developing and implementing child and youth risk management strategies
  • ensuring regulated organisations comply with the Working with Children (Risk Management and Screening) Act 2000.

Blue Card Services transitioned into the department on 1 October 2016.

Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management

The Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management provides a range of information and services for those who live, invest or work in a community titles scheme in Queensland.

We are committed to giving body corporate members, their committees and industry groups' information and tools to help them better understand body corporate legislation, and to avoid and resolve disputes. We provide:

  • an information service
  • a dispute resolution service
  • a search facility to access adjudicator's orders affecting particular community titles schemes.

Office of the Public Advocate

The Office of the Public Advocate is an independent statutory body established to protect and promote the rights, autonomy and participation of people with impaired decision-making capacity. We do this by undertaking statutory systems advocacy to influence government and non-government agencies and preparing systemic advocacy reports on a range of matters affecting the people we represent.

Office of the Public Guardian

The Office of the Public Guardian is an independent statutory body, protecting the rights and interests of vulnerable Queenslanders. The OPG has special responsibilities to support and protect the rights of children and young people in out-of-home care.

Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal

The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) is an independent, fair and efficient tribunal for all Queenslanders. QCAT resolves disputes and makes and reviews decisions about a wide range of matters including guardianship, residential and retail tenancy disputes, debt, consumer, trader, building and minor civil disputes, matters affecting children and young people, anti-discrimination matters, and occupational and business regulation matters.

Queensland Courts Service

Courts in Queensland are independent from the government. This means they can impartially settle disputes, deal with people who break the law, and determine the legal rights and obligations of individuals, business and government. We provide administrative support to Queensland’s courts—Supreme, District, Magistrates and Land courts— through courthouse registries, but cannot influence decisions made by a judge or magistrate.
