Edward ‘Red Ted’ Granville Theodore
Edward Granville (‘Red Ted’) Theodore was born 29 December 1884 at Port Adelaide, South Australia. Theodore moved to Queensland in 1906, working the mines and prospecting for wolfram and tin in the Chillagoe-Irvinebank hinterland of Cairns, where he became involved in the union movement. He entered politics in 1909, winning the Queensland Legislative Assembly seat of Woothakata (later known as Chillagoe) for Labor. He became Deputy Premier in 1915, and Premier of Queensland in 1919. He resigned as Premier in 1925 after being preselected for the Federal seat of Herbert. His bid for Herbert failed, and Theodore moved to New South Wales where, in 1927, he won the Federal seat of Dalley. In 1927 he became Deputy Prime Minister and Treasurer. After answering changes of fraud and corruption, Theodore quit politics in 1931. He died in Sydney on 9 February 1950.
