Have your say on proposed safety switch laws

Changes to the current safety switch laws are necessary to save lives.

The Safety Switch Regulatory Assessment Statement (RAS) proposes four options for change to extend the mandatory fitting of safety switches to power, lighting and other safety switch capable electrical circuits in all types of Queensland homes and temporary accommodation such as hotels and hostels.

Current trends in emerging technology, and in particular in the areas of energy conservation and renewable energy, have seen an increase in activity in and around ceiling spaces, increasing the electrical risk to people and property.

While more than 80 per cent of Queensland residential properties already have at least one safety switch installed, there is compelling evidence that there is more that can and should be done to improve the electrical safety of all Queensland homes and temporary residential accommodation.

The RAS opened for public feedback on 21 December 2011. You can submit comments on this proposal using the online feedback form. Consultation closes at 5pm on 31 March 2012.

All feedback received on this proposal will be considered by the government prior to making a final decision.
