Charges laid over Eastern Busway Project death

Date issued: 2009-12-16

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has laid charges against Thiess Pty Ltd following an extensive investigation into the death of a construction worker on the Eastern Busway project last year.

The charges allege the company breached section 28 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 by failing to meet its health and safety obligations as people conducting a business or undertaking.

A 25 year-old man died following an accident on the construction site, when an 18 metre concrete bridge beam fell approximately six metres from its pier supports to the ground below.

The complaints are scheduled for mention in the Brisbane Industrial Magistrates Court on 4 February 2010.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has advised the man’s family that the investigation is complete and charges have been laid.

As the matter is before the courts, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is unable to make any further comment.
