Government announces change to civil partnerships

On 22 June 2012 the Queensland Parliament passed the Civil Partnerships and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2012 .

The new legislation will come into effect in the near future and amend the Civil Partnerships Act 2011, which will be renamed the Relationships Act 2012.

Details about the new arrangements for couples, regardless of their sex, to legally recognise their relationship in Queensland will be released shortly.

As at the end of May, a total of 609 civil partnerships were registered and 21 had held declaration ceremonies in accordance with the Civil Partnerships Act.
