Law Week 16–20 May: Join the Justice Journey

Date issued: 2016-05-13

Law Week, 16 to 20 May, starts next week and is a national event which helps improve the community’s understanding of the role that law and justice plays in today’s society.

This year, the Queensland Government’s Department of Justice and Attorney-General is celebrating Law Week by launching ‘Justice Journeys’— a chance for secondary and tertiary students across Queensland to share a ‘day-in-the-life’ of people who work within the justice sector.

“We hope students are able to discover the people, careers and diversity of Queensland’s justice system through the experience of others and share these with the wider community,” the Director-General of the Department of Justice and Attorney-General David Mackie said.

“I hope their experiences enhance their understanding of Queensland’s justice system by adding a real-world, practical insight into topics they may have examined in their studies.

“I hope it may also inspire them to consider a career somewhere within the justice system and particularly for a young person that is already considering pursuing legal studies – seeing that there are many opportunities for a career outside of private practice.

“The justice system, and the Department in particular, is always interested in attracting the next generation of young, bright and enthusiastic minds that can make a positive contribution to the outcomes and services we provide to the Queensland community.

“I hope that it may also give them some greater insight and understanding about what it means to be part of the Queensland Public Service, the ethical responsibilities that entails and what it means be a professional public servant.”

The application process for students wishing to take part closed in April, with almost 120 nominations received. Over 50 students from across Queensland will get the chance to take part in this unique experience.

Students will share their experience by creating a ‘Justice Journey’ using video, animation, multimedia, photos and/or a written piece which will feature on the Law Week website: www.lawweek.qld.gov.au

There are a number of impressive journeys to follow on the website including profile pieces, such as:

  • Spending time with the State Coroner
  • Keeping records alive — meet a book binder
  • The work of a Corrective Services Dog Handler
  • Queensland Police Service Tactical Flight Officer.

During Law Week and in the coming weeks a number of student journeys will also be published including:

  • A visit to the Numinbah Correctional Centre
  • A day with the Attorney-General
  • Mediation training – the five day course
  • A day with the Director-General
  • Meeting the Deputy-Registrar of the Domestic and Family Violence specialist court
  • A day with the Chief Justice
  • Casino regulation
  • Alternative Dispute Resolution.
