    Information for job applicants

    Generally most permanent and temporary vacancies are advertised on Smart Jobs and Careers on the Queensland Government website.

    Below are links to some policies that may be relevant to you when applying for roles in the Department of Justice and Attorney-General.

    The former Graduate Development and Student Programs are currently undergoing a review due to organisational restructure. However, if you are interested in work experience in the legal area please email Crown Law recruitment at crownlaw@qld.gov.au.

    If you are interested in work experience in criminal law please email the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions at DPPjobs@justice.qld.gov.au.

    Traineeships

    To be eligible for the program, you must:

    • have completed a minimum two years of your current degree before the start of the program
    • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or have Australian permanent residency status.

    You will be employed on a temporary contract working up to 21 ¾ hours per week, which is negotiable with the business director.

    During the program you will have the opportunity to:

    • share experiences with other students
    • receive support and guidance through a buddy relationship with a staff member who has completed the graduate development program
    • attend a range of learning and development courses.

    Successful applicants will be paid a rate of $19.72 per hour plus 23% leave loading which equates to the AO2/4 classification level.

    Appointed mediators

    We employ mediators to provide free mediation services to people in Queensland. We have Dispute Resolution Centres in Brisbane, Mackay, Townsville, Rockhampton and Cairns and we also have mediators based in many other areas in Queensland. Each dispute resolution centre appoints mediators to their panel as needed. Mediators are attached to their nearest dispute resolution centre.

    Opportunities for Indigenous people

    Our department has developed a strategy to increase our employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

    We have a wide range of career opportunities for Indigenous people to develop their skills and actively contribute to a safe, just and supportive Queensland community.

    Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education to Employment Program

    This program is for Indigenous students in years 10, 11 and 12. It helps students complete their education and encourages them to do tertiary study. It does this by providing:

    • practical study support
    • mentoring and financial assistance.

    Full-time and school-based traineeships

    Traineeships give you:

    • the chance to get a qualification that is recognised anywhere in Australia
    • the work experience to get the job you want.

    National Indigenous Cadetship Program

    The National Indigenous Cadetship Scheme offers temporary appointments to Indigenous students undertaking tertiary studies at Queensland universities. The scheme provides practical on the job employment during university holiday periods as well as some financial support for students. Contact the Indigenous Support Officer at your university to register your interest.

    Wal-Meta Leadership Program

    As an Indigenous employee with our department, you may be eligible to take part in this program which is specifically designed to provide you with leadership skills and qualifications to advance within the Queensland public sector.

    Opportunities in the Electrical Safety Office

    Electrical Safety Office employs a range of professionals including administration officers, electrical safety inspectors and lawyers. Vacancies within the electrical safety office are listed on the Smart Jobs and Careers website.

    Electrical Safety Inspector

    JAG employs Electrical Safety inspectors to undertake a range of duties including:

    • developing and implementing electrical safety legislation, standards, and initiatives;
    • enforcing the electrical safety legislation by conducting audits of
      • electrical entities,
      • electrical contractors and workers,
      • workplaces and other practices.
    • investigating electrical incidents, complaints, and unlicensed and unsafe electrical work approval and registration of electrical equipment, electrical systems and energy efficiency labels.

    Opportunities in Industrial Relations

    Electrical Safety Office employs a range of professionals including administration officers, electrical safety inspectors and lawyers.

    Industrial Relations Inspector

    JAG employs Industrial Relations inspectors to undertake a range of duties including:

    • ensuring observance of state and federal awards and agreements and Acts administered by JAG, such as the Industrial Relations Act 1999
    • ensuring observance of the Trading Hours Orders of the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission providing professional advice on industrial matters (state and federal) to employers, employees, industrial organisations, the legal and accounting professions and the general public.

    Opportunites in Workplace Health and Safety

    Workplace Health and Safety Inspector

    JAG employs in the construction, ergonomics, hygiene and industrial fields to undertake a range of duties including:

    • participating in workplace assessments, in order to determine the degree of risk existing at a workplace and compliance to workplace health and safety standards
    • conducting investigations of incidents, injuries and complaints in order to implement the most effective enforcement option according to the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) enforcement framework and existing policies and procedures
    • contributing occupational expertise to the investigations of complex situations, gathering evidence and preparing reports to be used by regional investigations teams.
