Date issued: 2009-11-03

The purpose of this safety alert is to:

  • Inform people about electrical and other risks associated with the installation of ceiling insulation.
  • Provide a fact sheet that offers guidance on how to control these risks.
  • Inform insulation installers about additional electrical safety measures they must comply with effective 1 November 2009.

Background

On 15 October 2009, Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office issued a safety alert in response to a fatality and a serious injury in Brisbane associated with the installation of ceiling insulation.  The safety alert highlighted the serious risks of foil insulation coming into contact with electricity and the need to manage these and other risks associated with installing ceiling insulation.

On 1 November 2009 the Electrical Safety (Installation of Ceiling Insulation) Notice 2009 took effect which mandates new electrical safety measures for Queensland insulation installers.

Fact sheet

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland and the Electrical Safety Office have developed a fact sheet to assist insulation installers to identify and control a number of risks associated with installing ceiling insulation.

Insulation installers are encouraged to:

  • consider and apply the risk management principles outlined in the fact sheet
  • access the additional information referred to in the fact sheet
  • seek specialist expertise as required to ensure risks are properly assessed and controlled.
