Queensland floods - Electricity reconnection precaution

When a home or business is initially deemed electrically safe following the electrical contractor inspection, electrical contractors, tradespeople and owners must be aware that future demolition or building work could compromise the electrical safety of the premise.

It is apparent that the backs of power points and light switches are being exposed, posing the risk of electric shock when wall and ceiling linings have been removed at some time after the initial inspection.

To minimise this risk, electrical contractors should consider the following options:

• On the initial inspection, where it is possible that wall and ceiling linings may be removed, disconnect all circuits that could be affected.
• Provide the customer with access to power by installing a powerpoint and safety switch at a location which will not be affected by this type of work e.g. on the switchboard.
