Requirements for selling electrical equipment

Safety requirements

Electrical equipment is defined as either prescribed or non-prescribed electrical equipment. Both categories have requirements to ensure the electrical safety of the equipment before it can be sold.

Prescribed classes of electrical equipment can be found in Schedule 3 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 (PDF File, 1.02 MB).

Prescribed electrical equipment must go through a pre market audit for a certificate of approval before being sold or offered for sale.

Non-prescribed electrical equipment must meet the safety criteria of AS/NZS 3820 Essential safety requirements for low voltage electrical equipment (non-Queensland Government link) before being sold or offered for sale.

The new system aims to provide:

  • improved approval turn around
  • applicants for approval with the ability to upload reports and other documents required for the approval process
  • access to approval certificates online as soon as they are approved
  • automatic email notification of expiring certificates

Please note that the new system allows payment by credit card only.
