What is electrical work?

Electrical work is manufacturing, constructing, installing, testing, maintaining, repairing, altering, removing or replacing electrical equipment.

Examples include:

  • installing low voltage electrical wiring in a building
  • installing electrical equipment into an installation coupler or interconnector
  • replacing a washing machine’s low voltage electrical component
  • maintaining an electrical entity’s overhead power supply distribution system.

To understand the safety requirements for electrical work and your safety obligations you must understand relevant legislation and codes of practice.

The Electrical Safety Code of Practice 2010 - Electrical Work (PDF File, 740.7 KB) outlines practical ways of doing electrical work safely, reducing the likelihood of injury or property damage.

The code sets minimum requirements to meet safety standards.

You can work in a way that is equal to or better than the way set out in the code of practice.

Who is affected?

The Electrical Safety Code of Practice 2010 - Electrical Work (PDF File, 740.7 KB) directly applies to:

  • electrical workers

These may include:

  • restricted electrical licence holders
