Apply for an electrical contractor licence
Eligibility requirements
An electrical contractor licence is needed if you are providing electrical work for others as a sole trader, in partnership or corporation.

An electrical contractor licence is issued for one year.
It is your responsibility as an electrical contractor to ensure you maintain eligibility throughout this time.
To maintain an electrical business licence, a business needs:
- at least one qualified technical person who can perform and supervise the electrical work and
- at least one qualified business person.
They can be the same person and both are endorsed on the electrical contractor licence.
How to apply
Before applying carefully read the guidelines accompanying the application for a Queensland electrical contractor licence (PDF, 483.9 KB).
Make sure all information is included and that you:
- meet insurance requirements (PDF, 45.0 KB)
- submit a certificate of currency (PDF, 22.5 KB)
- complete a document declaration form (PDF, 64.4 KB)
- provide all necessary proof of identity for the qualified business person and qualified technical person
- include the fee as listed on the application form. Cheques or money orders should be made payable to 'The Department of Justice and Attorney-General'; credit card facilities are also available.

Insurance requirements for an electrical contractor
Section 43 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 (PDF File, 1.02 MB) requires that electrical contractors have broadform public liability insurance of at least $5,000,000 and consumer protection insurance of at least $50,000 under a contract of insurance approved by the chief executive.
To meet this requirement you need a certificate of currency from your insurer that confirms you have a policy with broadform public and products liability with:
- a limit of indemnity of at least $5,000,000 and
- Consumer protection insurance of at least $50,000.
This policy must include cover for:
- liability arising from testing and certification of work in accordance with the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002; and
- injury or damage arising from faulty design work performed by you including where you did not charge a specific fee for such design work; and
- injury or damage arising from incorrect advice including where you did not charge a specific fee for such advice; and
- goods in your care, custody or control.
