Update of qualified persons

Failure to have a current qualified business or technical person on your electrical contractor licence may result in cancellation of your electrical contractor licence.

Update of qualified business person

A qualified business person is:

  • qualified in the business side of doing electrical work
  • know the legislation surrounding electrical work
  • has five years' experience (or more) in business.

Section 7 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 (PDF File, 1.02 MB) sets out what is needed of the qualified business person.

You have 30 days to change the qualified business person. Failure to have a current qualified business person may result in cancellation of your electrical contractor's licence.

Your licence number will not be valid if this happens. You will be operating illegally. You will then need to reapply for a licence.

Update the qualified business person on your electrical contractor licence by completing the application for additional/change of qualified person on a contractor licence (PDF File, 390.1 KB).

Update of qualified technical person

A qualified technical person on an electrical contractor licence:

  • must be licensed and competent to perform electrical work unless work type does not need a licence
  • has completed required study.

Section 7 of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2002 (PDF File, 1.02 MB) sets out what is needed.
Only a qualified technical person can sign documents about the performance of electrical work.

If your qualified technical person changes and the new qualified technical person has different licensing endorsements it could affect your electrical contractor's licence.

An electrical contractor's licence may be cancelled if there is no qualified business and or technical person attached to the licence for one month.

Make sure your qualified technical person's electrical work licence is current.

If the qualified technical person's licence expires and you have no other nominated qualified technical person on your licence you cannot perform electrical work.

Update the qualified technical person on your electrical contractor licence by completing the application for additional/change of qualified person on a contractor licence (PDF File, 390.1 KB).
