Renewing your licence

June and July are the peak times for electrical contractor licence renewals.

To minimise delay in processing your renewal, carefully read the guidelines provided with your renewal form and complete your licence renewal application correctly.

Here are a few tips for renewing your licence.

Preparing for your renewal

Your renewal forms will be mailed to the address currently held by the Electrical Safety Office (ESO) approximately six weeks before your licence is due to expire.

It is your responsibility to keep the ESO up to date with change of contact details, so you receive your renewal form and any other important information regarding your licence. You can update your contact details either by form to the ESO or online.

If you provide an e-mail address in addition to your other information, the ESO will be able to send you important messages relating to legislation and safety, as well as notices for seminars.

Checking and updating your details

When you receive your renewal, check that the information about your licence is correct, e.g. if you have changed your business name you need to provide a verified copy of a certificate of registration, issued by the Office of Fair Trading in Queensland.

The ABN you supply must be attached to the legal entity/ legal name holding the contractor licence. If your ABN has changed you cannot renew this licence. You must apply for a new contractor licence using the online application.

The restrictions and conditions on your licence will match the credentials of your qualified technical person. If your qualified business or technical person has changed then you will need to complete a separate form to notify of those changes.

Be aware that if the new qualified technical person holds a different category of licence there may be a change to your contractor licence.

Insurance

All electrical contractors are required to hold current public liability insurance of at least $5,000,000. An acceptable evidence of insurance is a Certificate of Currency (PDF, 64 KB) signed and stamped by your insurer. Your insurer may use an alternative document, however it must provide the same and complete information required by the department’s certificate.

The legal name under which your contractor licence is issued must match the name of the insured on the insurance policy and the certificate of currency. Evidence citing only the trading name of your business will not be accepted.
