Mandatory signage proposed for the retail sale of electrical equipment

The Electrical Safety Board has proposed compulsory retail signage to inform consumers that DIY ('do it yourself') electrical work is both illegal and dangerous.

The proposal supports the 2004 Code of Conduct for the sale of electrical installation products and accessories to the public. The code specifies guidelines and practices which should be adopted when selling certain electrical installation materials, accessories and products to the general public.

The aim of the signage is to help raise awareness among consumers about the 'don't do your own electrical work' message. It is proposed that signs be displayed wherever electrical equipment is sold that require installation by a licensed electrical contractor.

The Electrical Safety Office is considering possible options for a practical regulatory signage requirement that provides the required information to the public without adversely affecting retailers.
