Electrical safety

Electrical safety for a person or property, means the person or property is electrically safe.

It’s about the way electrical equipment, an electrical installation or the works of an electricity entity are used or operated and the way electrical work is carried out.

Who has electrical safety obligations?

The Electrical Safety Act 2002 places obligations on people who may affect the electrical safety of others by what they do or fail to do.

Persons who have electrical safety obligations are:

  • electrical entities
  • employers
  • self-employed people
  • designers
  • manufacturers
  • importers
  • suppliers
  • installers
  • repairers
  • workers at places where electrical equipment is located
  • people in control of electrical equipment
  • other people at places where electrical equipment is located.

You may have obligations in more than one category.

Having multiple obligations

Examples:

  • A manufacturer of electrical equipment has the obligations of a supplier when the equipment leaves the factory.
  • You may be an employer, electricity entity and supplier of electrical equipment at one time and must meet the obligations in all three capacities.
