Easter, Anzac Day and Labour Day Trading Hours 2011

The Queensland Government has referred the state's industrial relations powers for the private sector to the Commonwealth from 1 January 2010.

As from this date all employers and employees, with the exception of state and local government, are covered by the national industrial relations system administered by the Commonwealth Government.

Special trading hours arrangements apply for retail shops over the Easter, Anzac Day and Labour Day periods.

Public holidays

The approved public holidays for 2011 in Queensland are:

  • Good Friday - Friday, 22 April 2011
  • Easter Saturday - Saturday, 23 April 2011
  • Easter Monday - Tuesday, 26 April 2011
  • Anzac Day – Monday 25 April 2011
  • Labour Day - Monday, 2 May 2011

(Note: Sunday, 24 April 2011 is not a public holiday)


Over the Easter period (Wednesday, 20 April 2011 to Tuesday, 26 April 2011) non-exempt shops are to remain closed on Friday, 22 April 2010 and only certain areas are allowed to trade on Sunday, 24 April 2011 and Tuesday, 26 April 2011. Independent retail shops are required to be closed on Friday, 22 April 2011 (unless they are predominantly food and/or grocery stores).


On Anzac Day Monday, 25 April 2011 non-exempt shops are to remain closed whilst independent retail shops are required to remain closed until 1.00 pm (unless they are predominantly food and/or grocery stores).


Non-exempt shops, excluding hardware shops in some areas of the State, are to remain closed on Labour Day Monday, 2 May 2011. Independent retail shops have unrestricted trading hours on this day.
