Justices of the Peace
Justices of the Peace (JPs) are highly-respected members of the community who play an important role in our society.They are volunteer workers in Queensland’s legal system and perform a wide range of services, from witnessing the signing of documents to hearing certain matters in court.
By dealing with routine matters, JPs free lawyers and the courts to concentrate on cases that require professional legal training.
There are three levels which each provide specialised services to the legal system and the public:
- Commissioner for Declarations (C.dec) or Justice of the Peace (C.dec)
- Justice of the Peace (Qualified)
- Justice of the Peace (Magistrates Court).
You do not need a law degree to become a justice of the peace, although some lawyers are also JPs. You can become a JP as long as you are:
- an Australian citizen by birth, descent or grant
- at least 18 years old
- of good character
- registered on the State electoral roll.
