Ceremony day
Arrival time
We ask that you and your witnesses arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled ceremony time. We need to record the names of your witnesses on the certificate of marriage and make sure everything is ready for your ceremony.
Witnesses
Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present at the marriage ceremony. We are unable to provide witnesses.
Formal declaration
Before the main part of the ceremony, you will both be asked to make a formal declaration in the presence of the celebrant, that you are legally able to marry each other.
The ceremony
Your ceremony will take 10 to 15 minutes. You will each be asked to repeat vows to formalise the marriage. Many couples then choose to exchange rings.
You will be asked to sign two certificates of marriage in the presence of the witnesses.
You are welcome to bring a CD for background music and organise to have a photographer present.
Interpreters
If either partner can’t speak English, you will need to have an interpreter present at the ceremony. The interpreter must sign a statutory declaration to certify their faithful performance in the role. For interpreting services, contact the Australian Government - Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) - Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) .
After the ceremony
Throwing confetti, rice or flowers, or consuming food or drink is not permitted in the building.
