Civil Partnership Notaries
How do I become a Civil Partnership Notary?
While no external notaries have yet been appointed, the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is currently developing the assessment and ongoing administrative requirements of the Civil Partnership Notary qualification scheme.
Please refer back to this website regularly for updated information. We also recommend subscribing for RSS feeds or following the Department of Justice and Attorney-General’s Twitter account for further updates.
From 2 April 2012, you will be able to apply to become a Civil Partnership Notary if you:
- are over 18 years of age
- have the knowledge and the skills or experience necessary to exercise the functions of a Civil Partnership Notary, and
- are a suitable person to be registered as a Civil Partnership Notary, as determined by the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
An application is made to the Registrar using an Application to Register as a Civil Partnership Notary (PDF, 877.0 KB), together with the required fee for registration.
In assessing an application the Registrar will consider:
- the applicant’s qualifications, skills and experience
- whether the applicant has been convicted in Australia, or elsewhere, of any offence
- whether the applicant is or has been an undischarged bankrupt
- anything else the Registrar considers relevant.
The Registrar may refuse to register a person as a Civil Partnership Notary if the Registrar is not satisfied of the matters set out above. If you are not happy about the decision of the Registrar, you may apply to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) to seek a review of the decision by the Registrar.
The Registrar may also cancel the registration of a Civil Partnership Notary if the Registrar considers the person does not satisfy, or no longer satisfies the criteria for registration as a Civil Partnership Notary. If you are not happy about the decision of the Registrar, you may apply to the QCAT to seek a review of the decision by the Registrar.
Who are currently registered as Civil Partnership Notaries?
No Civil Partnership Notaries have been appointed yet. Civil Partnership Notaries will start to be registered after 2 April 2012. The Registrar is the approving authority for Civil Partnership Notaries and will maintain a Register of Civil Partnership Notaries.
Currently, civil partnership ceremonies can be performed at the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, 110 George Street, Brisbane or one of these Queensland regional courthouses.
Members of the public who wish to become Civil Partnership Notaries or have a declaration ceremony by a Civil Partnership Notary are encouraged to refer back to this website regularly for updated information.
