Register a marriage

It is compulsory to register marriages that occur in Queensland.

Marriages that occur outside of Queensland can not be registered with us. If you were married outside Queensland, you will need to apply to the registering authority in the place where you were married.

Your celebrant is responsible for lodging the Notice of Intended Marriage (PDF File, 79.4 KB) and marriage registration information with our office on your behalf.

Once the marriage has been registered, you can apply for a marriage certificate.

It should be noted that the certificate issued by the celebrant or minister of religion on the day of marriage is ceremonial and will not meet the identity requirements of many government agencies (e.g. Queensland Transport, Passport Office) and financial institutions.
