Cloncurry QLD 4824
The Cloncurry township was established in the early 1870s to serve a remote and isolated area in the far north west of Queensland. It was officially declared a Country Post Office in 1871, and in 1872 a general store and a hotel were opened.
Cloncurry Courthouse was built and established soon after in 1898 and is important in illustrating the development of Cloncurry and the surrounding district.
Gold was first discovered in the area in 1867, and from the late 1860s through the last three decades of the 19th century, gold was found and mined throughout the district.
This courthouse and the site on which it is located have been associated with the administration of justice in the region since the mid-1880s.
The present courthouse is the second on the site and was erected in stages between 1897 and 1961. The additions and adaptations demonstrate how provision was made to increase services to match the mining and pastoral area’s needs.
