Innisfail

10 Edith Street
Innisfail QLD 4860

The current Innisfail Courthouse was the town’s third courthouse and was designed in the inter-war classical style. It is a two-storeyed brick building with a corrugated-iron roof and rendered details to the gables and verandahs.

Completed in 1939, the building survives as an example of the development of Innisfail as a commercial and official centre. It is also a visual reminder of the prosperity accompanying the expansion of settlement and the sugar industry in the surrounding Johnstone area during the early 20th century.

A curved portico forms the entrance to the building and addresses the corner through two columns with ionic capitals. A double-height verandah runs down each street facade. The gables are embellished with broken pediments and Venetian windows.

Innisfail Courthouse is a good example of a substantial brick courthouse, reflecting the high standard of Queensland government buildings designed during the early to mid 20th century.
