Workplace bullying

Sadly, many people feel they have been bullied in their workplace. Bullying can occur in many ways, both overtly and covertly.

Examples of overt bullying behaviour include:

  • yelling
  • abusive language
  • public humiliation
  • unwanted teasing or practical jokes
  • constant criticism
  • unjustified threats of dismissal

Examples of covert bullying behaviour include

  • sabotaging a colleagues work
  • withholding required information/resources from a colleague
  • constantly changing targets or work guidelines without explanation
  • overloading an employee with work and creating unrealistic deadlines
  • isolating or ignoring an employee on a consistent basis
  • sending offensive email messages
  • not giving credit where credit is due
  • malicious gossip

Being a target, witnessing or managing these kinds of behaviours can be very difficult. Yet, left unchallenged, bullying can lead to a toxic workplace and have severe impact on staff and managers.

To find out more about bullying and what you can do about it, we recommend attending training - Prevention of Workplace Bullying. This one day course is available in both Brisbane and key regional areas in Queensland. This course considers the dynamics of bullying and how we can respond to it. It has been running for several years and is highly rated by participants.

'Prevention of Workplace Bullying' can be taken as a single day or taken as part of a longer 3 day course, Workplace Conflict Resolution (PDF, 114.3 KB). This 3 day course covers Managing Difficult Behaviours (day 1), Negotiation Skills (day 2) and Prevention of Workplace Bullying (day 3).
