The Office of the Public Advocate seeks to protect the rights, autonomy and participation of people with impaired decision-making capacity in our community.
This paper covers issuese relating to both civil and criminal law, guardianship, reporting requirements, older persons as victims of crime, the arena of law enforcement, domestic violence protection orders, aged care complaints mechanisms, and access to legal assistance for older persons.
Secure, affordable and appropriate housing is important for everyone; for vulnerable people it can make the difference between a good life and isolation, exclusion and premature death.

Moving on from school to vocational training and work is identified as highly problematic for young people with a decision-making disability. Job failure and long-term unemployment has become an almost inevitable outcome for many.
Crisis is more likely to be a recurring feature in lives of people with mental illness or psychiatric disability and it can have enduring and far-reaching consequences. Not only can severe mental illness itself trigger complex crisis situations, but the reality of life for many people predisposes them to crisis—a reality that all too frequently includes homelessness, poverty, substance use, discrimination, social isolation and unemployment.
