Our work
The focus of systems advocacy is on the broad issues affecting the lives of people with impaired decision-making capacity. To do this effectively it is important that we build strong relationships and engage and consult with our key stakeholders to influence change. We also contribute to change through our evidence-management approach and our commitment to the translation of knowledge for key stakeholders and audiences.
Our priorities are:
- Promotion and protection of rights and interests
- Inclusion and access to the goods and services available to all citizens
- Sustainable service systems that improve outcomes
Some of our key priority areas are:
- Elder Abuse – a number of research initiatives designed to contribute to coherent and integrated policy responses to elder abuse.
- Client Profile Project – a joint project with the Office of the Adult Guardian investigating the client profile over a 10-year period.
- Social Inclusion - a number of research initiatives designed to contribute to debate and the promotion and protection of rights and interests for meaningful participation in all aspects of community life.
More details about our work can be found in the Service Statement, latest Annual Report and our list of publications.
Individual advocacy
OPA does not have the authority to undertake advocacy on individual matters, however individual matters can inform our work. We encourage you to inform us about issues experienced directly or which you may be aware of. This information may contribute toward evidence of system related issues which we can respond to.
For information on individual advocacy services, the Queensland Government Disability Online portal is a good starting point.
