JP and Cdec training courses
Justice of the Peace (Qualified) training course
The Justices of the Peace Branch conducts training courses for people to become Justices of the Peace (JP) (Qualified) in Queensland. The course is $340 and runs for three consecutive days providing participants with the knowledge and understanding of the role of JPs and its responsibilities. Course dates and locations are listed in the training course calendar.
The training course includes:
- all materials including The duties of Justices of the Peace (Qualified) handbook and the Justice of the Peace workbook
- lunch and refreshments each day.
Course structure
Day one
- An introduction to the role of a JP (Qualified) in Queensland, including:
- outlining the roles and responsibilities
- witnessing and certifying copies of documents
- practical training: witnessing documents
- outlining documents JPs are required to witness, including:

- statutory declarations
- affidavits
- land title documents
- power of attorney documents
- advance health directives
- wills.
Day two
The second day of the course builds on the information provided on day one, and applies the same skills and knowledge to other documents that can be witnessed and issued.
It covers non-bench judicial duties as a JP (Qualified) including other duties performed in the role and the issuing of:
- summonses
- arrest and search warrants
- justices examination orders.
Day three
The third day covers the final topics important to the role of a JP (Qualified). Participants undertake a three hour open book exam which forms part of the assessment to become a JP (Qualified).
Commissioner for Declaration training course
The Justices of the Peace Branch conducts training courses for people to become Commissioner for Declarations (Cdec) in Queensland. The course runs for one day (six hours) and is $205 which includes the course, learning materials and refreshments (including lunch). Course dates and locations are listed in the training course calendar.
The course covers:
- outlining the roles and responsibilities of Cdecs
- witnessing and certifying copies of documents
- practical training: witnessing documents
- outlining documents JPs are required to witness, including:

- wills.
