JPs Mentoring Program
The JPs Mentoring Program provides support to newly appointed Justices of the Peace (JPs) or Commissioners for Declaration (C.decs).
The program started in March 2008 and ensures that JPs and C.decs have the right skills and information to provide professional signing services to Queenslanders.
The Mentoring Program is an opportunity to work with established Justices by:
- acquiring new skills and knowledge
- building confidence
- building trust and having someone to confide in
- seeking guidance and advice in professional development
- learning to accept responsibility for decisions and actions
- accepting expert and objective advice.
The program also provides the chance to build rapport with your mentor, ask questions that may be concerning you, give and receive feedback and set personal goals to work towards as part of your overall professional development.
A mentor can be a valuable career advisor, networker and coach.
The Mentoring Program is also beneficial for JPs and C.decs wishing to refresh skills.
How the program works
It is recommended that you meet with your mentor during five sessions, or 10 hours throughout the course of the program and celebrate achievements and successful mentoring.
Stage 1 – develop the relationship with your mentor
- build rapport
- develop trust
- establish confidentiality
- set goals
Stage 2 – reach goals
- assess objectives and determine if you are on target to reach goals
- trouble shoot any issues you may have
- share experiences and build closeness with your mentor
- refer to other sources if needed.
Stage 3 – transitioning
- establish when goals have been met
- identify when the sessions end
- ask your mentor where further support can be obtained
- part company when the program has been completed.
Benefits to the mentor
The Mentoring Program also provides benefits to the mentor, including:
- the opportunity to pass on experienced knowledge and skills
- engaging in challenging discussions with people who have fresh perspectives on the profession
- reflecting on and articulating their role and the importance of being a JP or C.decs.
