Professional development for JPs and C.decs
Workshops
Free professional development workshops are held regularly for Justices of the Peace (JPs) and Commissioners for declarations (C.decs).
There are five workshops, providing existing JPs and C.decs with an opportunity to advance their skills and refresh specific knowledge as to their roles and responsibilities:
- General witnessing procedures: This workshop outlines standard witnessing procedures for JPs and C.decs to undertake their role on numerous documents such as Affidavits, Wills and Statutory Declarations. Also, allows time for open discussion on roles and responsibilities.
- Issuing Search Warrants: This workshop provides important information for Justices of the Peace (Qualified) only when considering the issuing of a search warrant under the Police Powers and Responsibilities Act 2000.
- Witnessing Land Title documents: This workshop focuses on JP and C.dec obligations under the Land Titles Act and Land Act including information on the processes of title registration.
- Witnessing General Powers of Attorney (GPAs), Enduring Powers of Attorney (EPAs) and Advanced Health Directives (AHDs): This workshop looks at witnessing guidelines for all three documents and also determining the capacity of the principal.
- Considering Justice Examination Orders: This workshop details the processes under the Mental Health Act 2000 for Justices of the Peace (Qualified) to consider applications and orders for Justice Examination Orders.

Seminars
The Justices of the Peace Branch conducts different types of refresher training to registered Justices of the Peace (JPs) and Commissioners for Declarations (C.decs) on a regular basis, and includes the conducting of seminars through the local State Member of Parliament.
The seminars are usually held on evenings for approximately 2-3 hours with guest speakers talking on a range of relevant topics such as:
- Identity fraud
- Witnessing Enduring Powers of Attorney documents
- Victim Assist Queensland
- General Witnessing procedures
The local Member of Parliament will invite Justices of the Peace and Commissioners for Declarations, who are constituents from that electorate to attend the seminar. Attendees must RSVP directly to the local Member of Parliament.
