Brisbane Youth Service #behindthelens

This project comprised of three main activities focused around young women's experiences, wisdom and knowledge in relation to domestic and family violence. Young women who access our group programming at Centre for Young Women (CFYW) created an Avant Postcard that was distributed across Brisbane Metro area during the month of May as part of Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month. More than 17,000 postcards were produced which featured the young women's photography on the front and key Brisbane Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence services and information on the back.

The images on the front were created as part of a series of workshops held at CFYW in collaboration with a sessional arts worker who worked alongside the young women also upskilling them in some basic photography skills. The young women ended up directing, creating and taking all the photographs on the front of our Avant postcard. The second part of the project was to carry out a social media strategy on the BYS Facebook page. During the month of May the BYS Communications Manager posted information, links and some of the photography from the project with the hashtags #behindthelens and #notnownotever.

The third part of the project was to hold a Launch event at BYS Centre for Young Women to celebrate the launch of our postcard and to display some of the artwork and photography the young women created during our creative workshops. Guests included the young women who participated in the project.

We had two young women speak at this event and share some stories relating to their own experiences of domestic and family violence. CFYW was proud that they were brave enough to speak and we feel positive that community members could hear their stories.
