Gender conversations - Muslims
Conversations about Gender for Community Empowerment was organised in partnership with Kuraby mosque and the Islamic Women's Association of Australia and supported by the Centre for Islamic Thought & Education, University of South Australia.
The all-day event included a combination of interactive paired and group activities including role-plays co-facilitated on a range of topics, including gender roles stemming from country-of-origin and family-of-origin perspectives; the What lies beneath model that addresses structural gender inequality in the broader Australian context and strategies for bystanders to prevent violence they witness; the Nga thana lui dha model in the context of trauma from the Aboriginal community perspective, and Gender equity model from the Islamic perspective.
Evaluations from the members of the Muslim community who attended were very positive and heartening, increasing the community's capacity to respond to gender-related issues.
