Domestic and family violence training
We are providing online training opportunities for Queensland Government agencies, non-government organisations and community groups to access foundational knowledge to learn about domestic and family violence (DFV) and coercive control.
Training modules for the DFV sector
The foundational online training modules are available statewide to government agencies, non‑government organisations and community groups. They have been developed in line with the Domestic and family violence training and change management framework released in April 2024.
The following 2 modules are the first to be released, with additional modules to be progressively released from 2025.
The modules are hosted through a learning management system (LMS) on the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research website (QCDFVR). Before you undertake the training you will need to register with the LMS.
The QCDFVR will collect your email address and name to manage your registration. They will then provide these details to the Women’s Safety and Violence Prevention team for reporting purposes. We will not share your details with anyone else unless we are required or authorised to do so. Learn more about how we will protect your privacy.
The modules are self-paced to ensure you can stop and start again when you please.
There are learning checkpoints throughout the module, where you will be presented with multiple choice questions to assess your understanding. You are required to complete each quiz before you can move on to the next section of the module. Don't worry if you don't get all answers correct, however it is recommended you read the correct answer when it is provided. There are no time limits to working through the quizzes and you can attempt each quiz as often as you need to.
Modules 1 and 2 discuss coercive control and DFV. These topics may be distressing for you and might bring up personal feelings and memories. It is important to look after yourself and take breaks anytime you need.
If you need support please contact 1800RESPECT on phone 1800 737 732, access your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) if available, contact 13YARN on phone 13 92 76, or access support through one of the alternative support services listed at the beginning of each module.
Module 1—Need to know: Domestic and family violence and coercive control
Module 1 explains to learners:
- what coercive control is
- how it underpins DFV
- how to identify patterns of behaviour that are a feature of coercive control and the impact it has on victim-survivors.
Module 1 follows the story of Riley and their experience as a victim-survivor of coercive control. Throughout the module, Riley walks users through various topics such as the drivers and gendered nature of coercive control, and how it impacts different groups of people.
Module 1 will take approximately 50 minutes to complete.
Module 2—Need to know: Coercive control and the law
Module 2 focuses on the changes to the law around coercive control that will come into effect from 26 May 2025.
Module 2 continues on from Module 1 with Riley, who walks learners through the upcoming changes to the law, provides an overview of the criminal justice system in Queensland, outlines the support and justice options available to victim-survivors of coercive control, and explains the potential consequences for persons using violence.
Module 2 will take approximately 30 minutes to complete.
Training modules for everyone
If you are a member of the public, a bystander or victim-survivor, and would prefer to undertake the training anonymously without registering to increase your understanding of coercive control, visit Need to Know to access the online training modules.
However, if your organisation requires you to have a statement of completion, you will need to register with QCDFVR.
