Below is a checklist of the key elements for developing gender-aware policy, programs and services.

It allows you to quickly check whether and how your work considers gender issues. It provides the basis for further analysis or action.

  • Will the policy, program or service affect the daily life of women and men differently? (Read the identifying issues section for more questions.)
  • Do the issues being addressed in this policy, program or service affect a particular group of women and girls? If yes, which group/s are affected and how are they affected? (Read the identifying issues and gathering evidence sections for more questions.)
  • Could any group be unintentionally excluded from this policy, program or service? If yes, which group is excluded and how can they be included? (Read the identifying issues section for more questions.)
  • Do you have data separated by sex and/or gender, which highlight gender-related issues? (Read the gathering evidence section for more questions.)
  • How will the affected group engage with this policy, program or service as customers or stakeholders? (Read the planning section for more questions.)
  • Does the proposed policy, program or service support gender equity? (Read the planning section for more questions.)
  • Is there value in linking with government departments or agencies on this issue or opportunity? (Read the planning section for more questions.)
  • Do you have staff trained in gender awareness and gender analysis? (Read the implementing section for more questions.)
  • How do you plan to communicate the policy, program or service in ways that respect and include diverse groups of women, men and people of other genders? (Read the communicating section for more questions.)
