Industry empowers women in engineering
The Women in Engineering program was established to address gender disparity at both tertiary and industry levels in engineering.
The program is increasing female enrolment in the University of Queensland (UQ) undergraduate engineering course. During the last 2 years, UQ has engaged nearly 4,000 female high school students and 300 teachers, expanding their outreach to schools within the Darling Downs and Wide Bay regions, and North Queensland.

In 2019, 25 percent of students who accepted their UQ undergraduate engineering offers were female.
Rio Tinto, Australian Power Institute, Powerlink Queensland, Ergon Energy and Energex–as part of the Energy Queensland Group–were among sponsors of the program, providing funding, mentorship opportunities and workforce pathways for young women striving for engineering careers. These partners are supporting and nurturing the next generation of young women to pursue the profession.
