Christmas joy for women’s shelters

The shelter support network established in the Department of Environment and Science (DES) were busy last December, organising a variety of much-needed everyday items and other gifts into welcome packs and Christmas presents.

Packs were donated to Maybanke Accommodation & Crisis Support Service – a women’s shelter in Brisbane which provides access to safe accommodation and support for women and children experiencing violence.

The service expressed their thanks to DES, “a big thank you to all the staff from DES for making Christmas so special for all of our families. They were so grateful for the presents and food. It was lovely for us to get back to work and have the children tell us about their gifts and what a great Christmas they had. The Mums as well, feeling very special receiving lovely gifts – it was very much appreciated,” the Manager at Maybanke said.

The DES shelter support network will continue to assist Maybanke and the department’s other partner shelter Flora House in Townsville throughout 2019. If your organisation would like to be involved please contact White.Ribbon@des.qld.gov.au.
