Queensland's strategy to strengthen responses to people using DFV
The Queensland Government is committed to strengthening its responses to domestic and family violence (DFV). However, we know that in order for Queensland to be free from DFV we need a clear and sustained focus on all persons using violence.
Broadening the focus: Queensland’s strategy to strengthen responses to people who use domestic and family violence 2024–28 (the strategy) guides a whole-of-government and community response that brings Queenslanders using, or at risk of using, violence into greater focus and provides them with increased opportunities to change their behaviours.
About the strategy
Aligning with the work of the Domestic and family violence prevention strategy 2016–2026 (the prevention strategy), this strategy sets out 4 priority areas that cover the continuum of prevention, early intervention, responding to violence and systemic reform:
- Increasing community understanding of why people use violence and how we can prevent DFV from occurring.
- Enhancing support for children and young people using or at risk of using DFV.
- Strengthening risk assessment, referral pathways and interventions for persons using or at risk of using DFV.
- Enhancing Queensland's system of accountability to effectively respond to persons using or at risk of using DFV.
The strategy responds to the findings from the Queensland Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Advisory Board 2019–2020 annual report, which outlined several recommendations regarding service system issues in responses to victim-survivors, persons using violence and children.
It is also a commitment under the Fourth action plan 2022–23 to 2025–26 of the prevention strategy, which includes a focus on delivering initiatives that actively address perpetrating behaviours and increase accountability for persons using violence.
Monitoring the strategy’s progress
The strategy will be monitored, reported on and evaluated under the Domestic, family and sexual violence system monitoring and evaluation framework (the framework), which supports the Queensland Government’s efforts to be transparent and accountable about how we measure progress and changes arising from the domestic, family and sexual violence reform agenda.
