Become a JP or C.dec
To become a Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner for declarations (C.dec) you must be:
- an Australian citizen
- at least 18 years old
- of good character
- registered on the state electoral roll.
You must list all criminal or traffic offences like speeding fines on your application, no matter how long ago they occurred. This information will be considered with your overall application.
We recommend you purchase a handbook from a magistrates court office, online, or by mail before applying. You can also attend one of our training courses at which you will receive a handbook. Information is available on both JP and C.dec training courses.

You do not have to be a C.dec before seeking appointment as a JP.
- Check the exam dates and locations.
- Complete and pass the exam.
- Purchase the workbook via email and complete it within 28 days.
- Download the JP application form or get one from your local Queensland State Member of Parliament.
- Complete the application form, sign the declaration and obtain two referee reports.
