Privacy Awareness Week 2026

It’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) (4–10 May 2026) and this year’s theme is Smart tech, smarter choices: Protecting your privacy in the age of AI.

Queenslanders expect us to protect their personal information, including when we use AI. That is why the 2026 PAW theme is so relevant. It reminds us all to be more vigilant and proactive when it comes to protecting and respecting personal information – whether it’s your own or information held by us.

The Department of Justice takes privacy seriously and we do everything we can to ensure your personal information is protected. We consider the protection of your personal information when we make choices about the technologies we adopt and how we use them.

There are simple things you can do every day to better protect your privacy and personal information.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • update your privacy and security settings on your devices
  • be mindful of what you share on social media about yourself and others
  • use multi-factor authentication to better protect your online accounts
  • be wary of public wi-fi. Avoid using it for things like internet banking and never use it for work activities
  • read terms and conditions and privacy policies when you sign up for a new service or app, so you know what you’re agreeing to and how your information will be shared or used
  • better understand your privacy rights in Queensland by watching this short explainer video.
