Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander funding

The Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DJAG) administers Queensland and Australian Government funding to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (Qld) Ltd (ATSILS).

ATSILS is a community-based organisation that provides culturally competent legal assistance services to disadvantaged and vulnerable First Nations peoples from over 20 locations across Queensland.

ATSILS provides the following services:

  • information
  • referrals
  • legal advice
  • legal tasks
  • duty lawyers
  • representation
  • community legal education resources and activities
  • law reform.

The services are delivered across family, civil and criminal areas of law.

Through DJAG, ATSILS has been allocated $142.7 million of government funding over 2020–25. This is comprised of $12.3 million of Queensland Government funding and $130.4 million of Australian Government funding.
