Reframing the Relationship with First Nations Peoples
The Department of Justice is building stronger relationships with First Nations peoples and communities across Queensland. We recognise First Nations peoples as the Traditional Custodians of Queensland’s lands, waters and seas. We respect their unique rights, cultures and cultural authority.
We are working with First Nations peoples to build a justice system that is:
- fair
- inclusive
- culturally responsive.
We also support self-determination.
Reframing the relationship plan
The Reframing the Relationship Plan 2026-2028 (the plan) explains how we will improve the way we work with First Nations peoples.
The plan covers our:
- policies
- programs
- services
- workplaces.
It builds on our previous Reframing the Relationship Plan and continues our commitment to improving outcomes for First Nations peoples.
It focuses on:
- building cultural capability across the department
- supporting First Nations leadership and participation
- improving outcomes for First Nations peoples through lasting change.
The plan is based on:
- self-determination
- equity
- accountability
- cultural respect.
It also supports our responsibilities under the Public Sector Act 2022. It aligns with the Queensland Government’s commitment to:
- Closing the Gap
- reconciliation.
Our commitment
Through this plan, we will:
- recognise and respect the rights, cultures and cultural authority of First Nations peoples.
- support self-determination and involve First Nations peoples in decisions that affect them.
- improve our policies, programs and services so they meet the needs of First Nations people.
- build cultural capability across the department.
- increase First Nations employment and leadership opportunities.
- build strong partnerships for better outcomes for First Nations peoples and communities.
Create lasting change
First Nations peoples are over-represented in the justice system. We are committed to working with First Nations peoples to help change this.
Through this plan, we will continue working towards a justice system that is:
- safer
- fairer
- more responsive to the needs of First Nations peoples.
Work together
We developed this plan with First Nations employees and stakeholders across the department and its statutory entities.
Implementation of the Plan is a shared responsibility across the department and our statutory entities.
We will monitor and review our progress throughout the life of the plan. This helps us improve our work and remain accountable for what we do.
By working together, we build stronger relationships and improve outcomes for First Nations peoples and communities throughout Queensland.
