Justice reinvestment
The First Nations Justice Office is working with the Justice Reform Office to jointly lead Queensland’s justice reinvestment plan.
The Queensland Government allocated $5 million over 3 years to support community-led projects that focus on local solutions. These projects aim to tackle the root causes of crime and reduce the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the justice system.
The Queensland Justice Reinvestment framework is a guide for how this funding should be used.
We worked with the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak to create this framework. It explains:
- how justice reinvestment will work
- how to check if communities are ready
- how projects will be supported after the funding is first given
- how projects are tracked and evaluated.
In November 2025, the Queensland Justice Reinvestment Grant program was launched. Organisations were invited to apply for funding to run community-led projects that focus on early intervention and prevention that address underlying causes of crime. The grant winners have now been announced.
