DFV Prevention Council and Moreton Bay taking steps to end domestic and family violence
In late July, the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council hosted a two-day program of meetings and workshops in the Moreton Bay Region to hear from local community leaders taking positive action to help end domestic and family violence.
The Prevention Council met with a range of local service providers, including government agencies trialling and delivering innovative programs to prevent domestic and family violence and support those impacted by this type of violence; government-funded organisations providing services for victims and perpetrators of domestic and family violence; and grassroots organisations demonstrating the incredible power of individual action to drive change in our communities.
The Prevention Council hosted workshops with people with disability and older people about their experiences of domestic and family violence and elder abuse and their specific needs to escape violence and abuse and rebuild their lives.
Other workshops with local student leaders and employers focused on the role of young people and workplaces in challenging gendered drivers of disrespect and violence, setting the standard for respectful relationships and supporting our peers and colleagues impacted by domestic and family violence.
The Employer Forum was co-hosted by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism, which is continuing to support ongoing Prevention Council action in the Region.
Moreton Bay Regional Council was involved throughout the program following a meeting between Co-Chairs Kay McGrath OAM and Bob Atkinson AO APM and Mayor Peter Flannery, to better understand the issues in Moreton Bay, community partnership opportunities and successful initiatives being led in the region to address domestic and family violence.
The Prevention Council came away from the event with a list of actions to work through with stakeholders over the coming months, leveraging their profile to shine a light on domestic and family violence.
