Fourth Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022 endorsed

The Council of Australian Governments recently endorsed and released the Fourth Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022.

Primary prevention is a top priority in the Action Plan, which identifies gender equality as key to ending violence against women and their children.

The Plan highlights five national priorities to reduce family, domestic and sexual violence:

  • Primary prevention including programs designed by, and tailored for, the specific communities they are intended to support, and urges coordination across primary prevention activities to maximise impact.
  • Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children through community-led solutions, and innovative and alternative models for victim and perpetrator support that contribute to safe healing and sustainable behaviour change.
  • Respecting and responding to the diverse lived experience and knowledge of women and their children affected by violence through policies and services to address the disproportionate impact of violence on particular groups.
  • Responding to sexual violence and sexual harassment through initiatives that promote informed consent, bodily autonomy and respectful relationships, and strengthen the capacity of all sectors to address sexual harassment.
  • Improving support and service system responses through collaboration across services, sectors and workforces to ensure responses to women are coordinated and meet women’s needs. Improve access to and embed trauma-informed support for perpetrators to prevent reoffending and promote rehabilitation and treatment.
