Helping women and children make fresh starts

The Department of Justice and Attorney-General’s (DJAG) inaugural freshstarts fundraiser saw 25 work teams and several individual staff fulfil a wish-list of new household items for a Brisbane northside women’s refuge.

During Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month more than $8,000 worth of manchester, kitchen appliances, cookware, cleaning products, petrol vouchers, go cards and movie tickets were delivered to the refuge by the Attorney-General, the Director-General and a small team of freshstarts organisers.

The refuge held a morning tea for the contingent, conducted a tour of the accommodation and explained the needs and issues of the women and children who live there.

Each of the work teams that contributed received a personalised certificate of thanks from the refuge.

“Every time we give a woman an item we will be reminded of the generosity of your staff,” said the refuge Manager.

The proceeds of the DJAG 2019 International Women’s Day Breakfast were donated to the freshstarts fundraiser. Courthouse staff in Southport and Cairns also contributed items to their local women’s shelters.

DJAG staff also participated in other Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month activities, including local community candle light vigils, a Red Flags in Relationships event, the Darkness to Daylight Challenge and the Queensland Law Walk.
